These 6-inch antique steel scissors commemorate the ascension of Pope Pius X
to the papal office in 1903. At the time, such commemorative items would have
been made by numerous German cutlery manufacturers out of Solingen, as they
were for decades afterwards. While the scissors are very worn, Pope Pius X’s
image is distinct because of his hair. On the reverse is the image of The
Virgin Mary. The H. Boker & Co, which is stamped on the scissors represents the
New York branch of Boker Solingen at the turn of the 20th Century. These
scissors are worn and were obviously well-loved as their cutting blade has been
sharpened so many times that it now a point, and they still cut well.
